Almost €900,000 in funding awarded to Waterford for outdoor activities

Waterford has been allocated €893,454 for outdoor recreation infrastructure.
Waterford TD and Minister of State for Local Government and Planning John Cummins welcomed the funding for Cappoquin, Villerstown and Dunmore East.
Minister Cummins said he was delighted to welcome the funding.
“Today’s announcement offers significant economic and social benefits for our rural communities in Waterford, giving families a variety of activities that are easily accessible, low-cost and on their doorstep.
“Anyone who has ever been to Waterford knows just how fortunate we are here in Waterford to have so many places of natural beauty.
"The ORIS aims to improve these amenities even further, making them even more enjoyable places to visit,” said Minister Cummins.
The funding was part was provided under measures two and three of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
Of the almost €900,000 in grant aid, €493,454 was allocated to the Cappoquin Railway Bridge Loop Walk.
The funding will see the development of phase two of the Cappoquin Slipway to Viaduct Viewing Point and Cappoquin Rowing Club grounds to Avonmore Bridge.
In Dunmore East, €200,000 was allocated to the Coastal Walk Upgrade Project.
The funding will allow for the upgrade of the trail surface between Portally Cove and Ballymacaw Cove.
Villierstown Quay Enhancement Project also received €200,000 for the enhancement and upgrade to facilitate water-based outdoor recreational activities.
“I look forward to seeing these projects being completed in the time ahead.
“I’d encourage everyone to make use of the amazing outdoor facilities we have on offer throughout the county.
"I am very much looking forward to seeing the progression of the three projects, which will enhance our amenities even further,” said Minister Cummins.
Nationally €16.5 million was allocated to 63 outdoor recreation projects.

Waterford TD, Government Chief Whip and Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler, also welcomed the funding.
The minister thanked Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, for the recognition of these facilities.
And she said great credit was due to Waterford City and County Council for their work with communities on the ground.
“Investment in outdoor recreation plays a key role in further enhancing our most beautiful and unique outdoor amenities.
"It also provides a boost to local economies in towns & villages throughout Waterford by attracting visitors and furthering our reputation as a destination county for active tourism, said Minister Butler.
