Waterford City and County Council, working with Waterford Integration Services, Everyevent and Waterford Cultural Quarter (WCQ), acknowledged this year's Africa Day with a colourful festival of activities in the city.

The event included a range of activities incorporating two music stages, dance groups, market stalls, children’s activities, petting zoo, food tasting and more.

The event took place on Saturday, May 25, in the heart of the city's cultural quarter on O'Connell Street. It attracted a large crowd of visitors who were entertained throughout the afternoon.

Africa Day celebrates African cultures and the contribution people of African descent make to Irish life.

The Africa Day celebrations are organised by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs in partnership with African embassies in Ireland and local authorities around the country.

Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Seán Fleming T.D. said the initiative provided an opportunity to promote the links between Africa and Ireland and to learn more about the diversity and vibrancy of African cultures.

Waterford has a strong African community and that was highlighted at the event.
