Abbey Community College celebrates student excellence

Abbey Community College recently hosted its annual awards evening and it was a great opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedication of the student body.
The event was held on Tuesday, May 20, and was organised to honour students who had demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, the arts, and sport throughout the school year.

A spokesperson for the school said the event welcomed several distinguished guests who presented awards including Mr. David Phelan (Chairperson of the Board of Management), Sr. Mary Gough (Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary), Cllr. Jenny Catt Slattery (Board of Management), Maria Skehan (Board of Management), and Claire Bolger (Board of Management).

The school was especially pleased to welcome Eileen Curtis, former Chief Executive of Kilkenny Carlow Education and Training Board, as the evening’s special guest. A large number of staff members were in attendance, proudly stepping on stage to present awards and celebrate the achievements of their students across a wide range of disciplines.
Parents and guardians joined in the celebration, enjoying a night that showcased the talents and dedication of Abbey’s students.
The evening featured musical performances by Isabelle O'Brien (piano solo of Experience by Einaudi), a vocal quartet of Keelin Duggan, Méabh Fenton, Mara Matthews, and Emma Nathan (For Good from Wicked), and a powerful performance of Unstoppable by the school choir.

Awards were presented across a wide range of categories including: Student of the Year – Isabelle O'Brien; LCA Student of the Year – Lily Rose Kavanagh; TY Student of the Year – Caitlin Kinsella; Sacred Heart of Mary Life Award – Eric Kubinski; Sports Star of the Year – Eve Dunphy; Best Leaving Certificate 2024 – Jamie Wells; Best Junior Cycle Results 2024 – Vita Marohnic. Additional awards included Academic Excellence, 6th Year Subject Awards, Sports Awards, Co-Curricular Awards, and Special Recognition Awards.

Principal, Michelle Jefford expressed her gratitude to all who attended and praised the students for their achievements. She also acknowledged the dedication of the school’s staff, whose commitment and enthusiasm continue to support student success.

“As we reflect on the year gone by we take immense pride in the shared commitment of our students, staff, management, and parents." she said.
