85 homes brought back from vacancy in Waterford providing much-needed housing boost

“Beyond addressing the demand for social housing, renovating these unoccupied homes also benefits communities by preventing decline and abandonment," said Minister of State John Cummins.
In Waterford, 85 homes were brought back into use last year.
The Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins has published figures showing nationally that 2,357 vacant social homes were brought back into active use in 2024 under the Voids Programme.
Waterford City and County Council has shifted towards a planned maintenance model, which leads to quicker repairs, continuous use, and faster re-letting of social homes. 84 homes were returned to use in 2023 and 85 in 2024.
This trend is expected to continue in 2025 and will mean ongoing upkeep and more consistent occupancy.
Minister Cummins said: “Acting quickly to bring vacant social housing back into use is critical to help ease pressure on the existing housing stock, boost supply, and ultimately to provide much-needed homes.
“Beyond addressing the demand for social housing, renovating these unoccupied homes also benefits communities by preventing decline and abandonment.
“I commend Waterford City and County Council for their partnership in returning these homes to active use.”
