Over 500 new-build social homes are at the design or construction phase in Waterford, according to the latest figures from the Department of Housing.
Waterford Fine Gael TD and Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins TD, said the figures demonstrate the government’s accelerated delivery of social housing.
“I remain firmly committed to sustaining progress in Waterford City and County and throughout the country. In July, we made a significant move to a Single Stage Approval Process for social housing projects under €200 million.
“While today’s focus is the number of houses in the delivery pipeline, for me, it is ultimately about the people who need housing.”
CSO data shows there were 9,235 new builds nationwide in Q3 2025, bringing the total amount for 2025 to 24,325. Barring a major upswing in Q4, the government is projected to fall comfortably shy of its target to build 50,500 homes per year. The CSO lists the median price of residential properties in Waterford at €299,000.
Latest figures from August show that the price of existing residential properties in Waterford rose by 24.1% over the past two years. Existing properties rose by 5.27% over the same period.
Latest homelessness figures stand at 119.
“I want homes built at pace and at scale across all types, social, affordable, cost rental and private,” Deputy Cummins said.
"We are now constructing more social housing than at any point since the 1970s."
