Farming: Proud tradition of Ireland's oldest agricultural show

Since 1826 the Iverk Show has been developed as a family and community-based event.
The Iverk show, which takes place at Piltown, Co Kilkenny on Saturday, August 23, is the oldest agricultural show in Ireland, proud of its longstanding history as a one-day traditional yet modern agricultural event.
Since 1826 the Iverk Show has been developed as a family and community-based event hosting All-Ireland championship finals and qualifiers for other finals.
The annual show is held on the fourth Saturday in August in the village of Piltown on the N24 in County Kilkenny, between Waterford and Clonmel.
In 1866 the press reported: “There is no doubt that the show excels in the way of a reunion or social gathering.”
The organisers are proud that this tradition continues right up to the present show.
There are classes for in-hand and riding horses, show jumping, sheep, cattle, poultry, eggs, dogs, fruit, vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, farm produce, arts, crafts, jams, cakes, honey... you name it!
"We have classes for adults and children with special sections for primary and secondary school pupils," the Iverk team explained. "The ‘Most Appropriately Dressed Lady’ competition is always well supported and every bonny baby gets a prize."
The famous Iverk catwalk is a hive of activity for the fashion show. A display of vintage cars, tractors and machinery with working demonstrations is one of the highlights.
The 300 to 400 trade stands from large outdoor exhibits to small indoor industries and artisan food stalls represent all sections of commercial industries.
The Food Village attracts local and national food producers.
A garden section with a free children’s play area is a must visit area for families. The free musical entertainment plaza is a great place to relax and unwind. The most exciting competition of the day is the ‘Tug-O-War’, especially when local children are invited to take part. The craic is mighty. Parking is free with a special area for disabled parking.
The Iverk team said: "We greatly appreciate your participation and cooperation and look forward to seeing you all at this year’s show with a ‘céad míle fáilte'."
