Gardaí are investigating an incident after a lit newspaper was stuffed through the letterbox of a house in Co Donegal in the early hours of this morning.

The terrifying incident happened at approximately 2.40am at the house on Church Street in the village of St Johnston.

Gardaí are treating the incident as an arson attempt.

Only smoke damage was caused to the house during the incident and nobody was injured.

However, gardaí are treating the matter seriously and have launched a full investigation.

They have issued an appeal to anybody who may have witnessed a "man or men" walking in the area between 2.15am and 3am this morning.

A spokesperson said "We appeal to anyone who may have been in the area between 2.15am and 3am this morning and who may have observed a man or men on foot in the area or any type of suspicious activity to get in touch with us.

"As always, we are appealing for dash-cam footage from that area if anyone can assist with that. Gardaí may be contacted in Letterkenny on 074-9167100 with any relevant information. The Garda Confidential Line may be reached on 1800 666 111."
