Local Notes: Riddle of the week, Monster Céilí, sympathies, bingo night and more

Well done to Na Déise ladies footballers on their great win over St. Anne’s in the intermediate county championship.

Monster Céilí

Don’t forget to put the date in your diary for the Sliabh gCua Set Club Monster Céilí. The Céilí is open to all ages and stages of dancing. We are looking forward to an evening of craic with our old friends and hopefully meeting new friends both to reminisce and create new memories of the love and tradition of Irish dancing in Sliabh gCua.

Monnie Hallahan has kindly offered to be MC for the Céilí and we are also going to have a photographic display of old photos and newspaper cuttings from down through the decades. The Céilí will start at 3pm on October 20, for a fun-filled three hours and there will be cake and a cuppa for everyone. The Tuck Shop will also be open on the day. Looking forward to seeing you there. The entry fee is €10 per adult and €5 for children under 18. Children under school going age are free.

Sympathy

We extend our sincere sympathy to the O’Flynn Family on the recent passing of Gráinne O’Flynn, Croughclooney, Ballinamult. Gráinne was predeceased by her parents Tomás and Berry, brother Liam and nephew Feidhlim. We extend our sincere sympathy to Gráinne’s family Eoin, Jean, Éanna, Nessa, Honor, Diarmuid, Fergal, Conor, Oliver, Padraig and Aisling, and their partners, aunts, uncle, nephews, nieces, relatives and her many friends. May Gráinne rest in peace.

Sliabh gCua Lotto

The jackpot numbers drawn last Sunday night were 8,24 and 28 and there was no jackpot winner. The five x €20 winners were Ruby and Kay, Teresa Fraher, Gemma and Logan, Gary O’Shea and Maureen Dalton. The promoter’s price of €20 was won by Claire Dalton. Next week’s draw will be for a lotto jackpot of €1,700.

Bingo Night

Our scheduled bingo night for later this week in Ballymacarbry Community Centre is being pushed out by one week to Friday, October 18, at 8pm as we wanted to avoid clashing with the Senior Ladies County Final. As usual a single book will cost €13, double book €15 and a jackpot sheet €2. The tuck shop will be open for snacks. Please note that U18’s need to be accompanied by an adult. All proceeds in aid of the Panda Playground Development Fund.

Melleray Tractor Run

The Melleray Tractor Run will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Registration will start at 11am and the tractor run will commence at 1pm. More information to follow closer to the date.

Riddle of the Week

Last week’s riddle was: If you throw a blue stone into the red sea, what will it become?

Answer: Wet.

This week’s riddle is: Four cars come to a four-way stop, each coming from a different direction. They can’t decide who got there first, so they all go forward at the same time. All four cars go, but none crash into each other. How is this possible?

Answer in this column next week.
