Late Betty Upton

On Saturday, July 13, Elizabeth (Betty) Upton (née: Hennessy), Bishopsgrove, Ferrybank, passed away. Formerly of Mount Sion Avenue, she was predeceased by her husband Noel (De La Salle, Stephen’s Street), her parents Edward and Kathleen (Hennessy) and her sister Angela.

Betty will be sadly missed by her daughter Orla, son Karl, grandchildren Dylan and Lia, son-in-law Brendan, daughter-in-law Corinne, brothers Mossie and Teddy, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Having reposed at Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, on Monday the cortege walked on Tuesday morning to Ballybricken Church for Mass, followed by burial in Butlerstown Cemetery.

Olympics 2024

Tom Barr, a member of Ferrybank Athletics Club, has been selected for the Mixed 4 x 400m Relay at this years Paris Olympics.

He joins Rhasidat Adeleke and Sharlene Mawdsley as part of the 23 track and field athletes representing Team Ireland. Additionally, Mia Griffin from Glenmore will compete in the women’s cycling events, having qualified for the Team Pursuit, which also secured her places in the Omnium and Madison events.

Mia's journey to the Olympics is inspiring. She is the daughter of PJ Griffin, a cycling enthusiast with whom she watched the Tour de France during her childhood, sparking her interest in the sport. Mia was also a talented camogie player, representing Kilkenny at minor and intermediate levels.

Her mother, Maria, who works at SETU, played a crucial role in Mia’s path to the Olympics by identifying the opportunity through Cycling Ireland's Talent Transfer programme. Notably, Ireland is the only country to have qualified a team for these events without having a velodrome, highlighting the significance of this achievement. The event is on Tuesday, August 6, at 5.30pm while Thomas Barr’s event is on Friday, August 2 at 7.10pm. Best of luck to all our Irish Olympian’s taking part in Paris 2024.

Keith was cremated on Friday, July 19, in The Island Crematorium after Requiem Mass in St. Bartholomew's Church, Piltown, Kinsalebeg.

Ferrybank Tidy Towns

The Ferrybank Tidy Towns project is relaunching with several exciting initiatives and we welcome your ideas for new projects.

Ferrybank has entered the National Pride of Place Awards, with judging scheduled for the morning of Thursday, August 29. To prepare, we need assistance with specific tasks, including enhancing the flower boat on Rockingham Green opposite the Sacred Heart Church. Additionally, we are organizing a litter pick and some weeding along the route prior to the judging. If you're interested in contributing, please contact us at ferrybankcn@gmail.com.

The new group is eager to hear from you and looks forward to collaborating to restore Ferrybank’s beauty after the long break in our Tidy Towns activities due to the Covid pandemic. The Ferrybank Tidy Towns Committee re-entered the competition in 2016 for the first time in over 40 years. Your help and involvement would be greatly appreciated.
