Waterford library event will feature a bit of 'mouthing'
Author, Orla Mackey will be in conversation in Ardkeen Library to talk about her debut novel, 'Mouthing'
What promises to be an engaging and entertaining event will take place in Ardkeen Library in Waterford City on Saturday, May 24, at 3pm.
Author, Orla Mackey, will be in attendance to discuss her debut novel, 'Mouthing', as part of the Writers at Waterford Libaries series of events.
Mackey, who is also a teacher based in Kilkenny, will be 'in conversation' to discuss her writing and her new novel.
She studied English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin and 'Mouthing' is her first novel.
Narrated by several generations of villagers, 'Mouthing' traces the fortunes of one small community from the mid-20th century to the early 21st, in a series of highly confessional and darkly hilarious monologues.
The good people of Ballyrowan delight in twisting the knife, in tormenting one another, in perfecting the art of schadenfreude and it becomes clear, none of them are entirely reliable witnesses.
As each character offers their version of ‘the truth’, upending the readers assumptions at every turn, it becomes apparent how feuds are passed down through the generations, how families are estranged or reunited and fortunes made or lost.
It also becomes apparent how strict social expectations loosen over decades and how some things remain stubbornly unchanged.
Everything from secret hopes and private sorrows, triumphs and humiliation, pleasure and grief are all absorbed into the merciless chorus of 'mouthing'.
In an online statement a spokesperson for Waterford Libraries said: 'The novel is a an acerbic, unsentimental love letter to rural Irish life, where everyone knows everyone else’s business and everyone has an opinion on it – where ‘community’ is both a lifeboat and a life sentence.'
The forthcoming event will be free of charge to attend, however, booking is essential.
