The Knotted Chords will be one of the acts performing over the St Patrick's Day festival

Local and visitors to Waterford City can expect some brilliant fun events for this year's St Patrick's Day festival.

The event will run from Friday, March 14, to Monday, March 17.

Waterford City and County Council, in association with Fáilte Ireland and EveryEvent, announced details of the festival programme and said this year's theme is 'Saints & Scholars'. The organisers said this year's event will celebrate the Déise's rich heritage with parades, performances, carnivals and music throughout the bank holiday weekend.

"While the festival is a celebration of Waterford’s people and communities, its culture and heritage, its diversity, and its musical and artistic talent, there will be tribute paid to St. Patrick and to Waterford’s very own Scholar, Luke Wadding, a 16th Century academic, author, historian and Franciscan," said a spokesperson for the organisers.

While full details of the programme will be printed in next week's edition of Waterford News & Star and also here on waterford-news.ie some of the highlights will include a city centre playground, music, arts and crafts and late night entertainment.

The festival parade on St Patrick's Day will take place at 1pm sharp.
