The Last Pearl

From the team that created the productions 'Shackleton' and 'The Third Policeman', Blue Raincoat Theatre Company are delighted to bring their most recent work, 'The Last Pearl' to audiences in Waterford as part of a national Spring tour.

The production received 5 stars from the Glasgow Herald and was described as “an exquisite piece of theatre’ by The Scotman.

The Herald meanwhile described it as 'a dramatic richness that brings home the everyday tragedies of the world’s environmental fallout with heartbreaking poignancy.'

'The Last Pearl' is loosely based on the ideas of the environmentalist James Lovelock and was first presented in Sligo in the Autumn of 2023, the following year touring to Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Using scaled models as well as bunraku and shadow puppetry, 'The Last Pearl' tells the story of a pearl diver and her daughter as they scavenge in a dying world.

It is the story of their ability to adapt to a changing environment and ultimately survive.

The production features work from long-time collaborator and designer Jamie Vartan ('The Last Hotel', 'The Walworth Farce', 'Ballyturk') along with Blue Raincoat ensemble members Sandra O'Malley, John Carty, Brian Devaney, Aisling Mannion and Aine Ní Laoghaire.

Sound Design is by Joe Hunt with Lighting Design by Barry McKinney while direction is by Niall Henry.

Blue Raincoat Theatre Company end their 2025 national tour of their critically acclaimed production 'The Last Pearl' at the Factory Performance Space on February 28 and March 1.
