Olivia Shannon’s brace was the difference as Waterford FC’s Women’s side claimed a first ever competitive victory this evening, following a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers, in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division at the Showgrounds in Sligo town.
Both teams started strongly, with Lauren Walsh very impressive in defence for the visitors.
The away side opened the scoring in the 36th minute through Shannon, who became the first ever Waterford FC Women’s goal scorer in competitive football. Sligo failed to clear Gary Hunt’s side’s corner before the ball deflected off Shannon, and the ball ended up in the back of the home side’s net.
The away side defended well for the remainder of the half and went in 1-0 up at the break.
The Blues doubled their advantage in the 64th minute, when Shannon got her second goal of the game from the penalty spot.
Despite pressure from the hosts for the remainder of the game, the away side defended brilliantly with Maeve Williams brilliant between the sticks for the victors.
