Waterford FC bolster defensive options with Ashton signing

Waterford FC have strengthened their squad ahead of the transfer deadline with the signing of promising full-back Joe Ashton.

The 19-year-old arrives at the RSC after spending the past four years in Burnley’s academy system, where he developed his game and gained valuable experience through loan spells with Hyde United and Marine FC in England.

During his time across the water, Ashton made 17 appearances in the National League North while also featuring regularly in Premier League 2, Premier League Cup and FA Youth Cup competitions, making more than 30 appearances for Burnley’s youth sides.

The left-footed defender joins the Blues for the remainder of the 2026 season following a successful trial period that convinced head coach Graham Coughlan and his backroom team he could add depth and competition to the squad.

Ashton becomes Waterford’s second signing of the summer transfer window following the arrival of Blair McKenzie and is expected to provide cover on both flanks of the defence.

Speaking after completing the move, Ashton expressed his delight at joining the club.

“I’m delighted to be with the Blues and I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I’m excited to see you all at the RSC soon.” Coughlan believes the youngster has the attributes to make a positive impact.

“Joe is a good addition to our side,” said the Waterford boss. “He’s hungry and eager, and that will only help drive the culture we’re trying to create. He’ll make our squad stronger, add competition for places and his flexibility will help us in a variety of positions.” Ashton will wear the number six shirt for the Blues.
