Waterford's Shane Flynn and Sam Glenfield celebrate after the game in Dalymount Park.

SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division Reaction – Sam Glenfield

There was a beaming smile on the face of Waterford FC midfielder Sam Glenfield after Friday’s extraordinary SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division win over Bohemian FC at Dalymount Park as his golden strike nine minutes from time won a thriller.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 International produced a man of the match performance alongside skipper Barry Baggley as the two Fleetwood Town loanees led the comeback after the Blues fell two goals behind in the first-half before a brilliant second-half comeback.

Glenfield, who moved to the club on loan from the Cod Army, struck a beauty that stunned former assistant Alan Reynolds as the Blues managed to defeat his side for a third-time since he became their boss to end the rot of three straight league defeats.

'A BRILLIANT WIN'

Speaking after the game, the match winner said: “I’m ecstatic after that there. It’s a brilliant to get the three points and what a way to get my first professional goal. It was brilliant to win it, but to win it in that fashion is unbelievable. I’m buzzing.

“It was the same as last week where we weren’t at it in the first-half. We got a bit of a shake-up at half-time, and we came out in the second-half on fire. It was good to get the goal early, and I think from there, we had them on the back foot for most of the second-half. It was brilliant to get the win.

“I’m happy with my own performance. I try to do that every week where I try to get about and help the team as much as I can. It was a great game to be involved in and I’m buzzing with it. I mentioned how the fans will become the 12th man throughout the rest of the season, and you could see that tonight.

“They pushed us under the line when we needed it. I know that they had to hold their breath with the penalty at the end. We all did but thankfully we got that bit of luck. They were brilliant and I hope that they’re buzzing heading down the road because I know I am!”

'A SQUAD EFFORT'

Asked about how much the win meant and the manner of it, Glenfield added: “I think that this shows that we’re a squad and we’re there for each other. It’s brilliant to see us get the win, but we need to build on it now and take it into next week.

“For the goal, I just saw the ball fall at the edge of the box and I just thought to myself to hit it. Thankfully it went flying into the bottom corner of the net. Dalymount Park is very hard place to come and in the first-half, we made things difficult for yourself too. It’s brilliant to come away with the three points.

“I think that we have to take the second-half performance from tonight going forward. I think that maybe going forward we need the gaffer and the backroom staff to get right behind us and start shouting from the start. Hopefully that will wake us up from the first minute instead of the 46th.”
