Waterford FC have parted ways with Head Coach Keith Long after an abysmal run of six league defeats on the trot that saw the club slipped to third bottom in the division with a 4-0 trouncing against Sligo Rovers the final straw.

Long was asked by this newspaper after Friday's defeat was he concerned about his future in a post match interview to which he replied "why would I be concerned?" before going onto say "do you want me out?".

When challenged further on the issue, Long added: "I would say that we're under pressure." A statement from the club on Saturday morning confirmed that Long has departed the club with immediate effect.

Owner Jamie Pilley said: “I’d like to thank Keith for his efforts and commitment over the past two years at Waterford Football Club.

“He will be fondly remembered by all at the club for his role in returning the club to the Premier Division and this decision wasn’t one which was taken easily.

“However, the recent run of results meant it necessary for a change. We now plan to take our time to ensure we find the right man to move the club forward.”

The club have confirmed that they will issue a further update on the first team staff in due course. It would be expected that Matt Craddock will take charge for the Munster derby clash with Cork City.
