New Waterford FC manager Jon Daly has turned to Scotsman Richard Foster to join him at the RSC as assistant coach ahead of the 2026 SSE Airtricity Men’s League of Ireland Premier Division, which will get underway in February.

It comes after Daly was appointed as Blues boss in the last week where the former St. Patrick’s Athletic and Dundalk boss will now be hoping to put together a squad that capable of competing in the top division.

After the club won their place in the Premier Division following a 2-1 win over Bray Wanderers in the promotion/relegation playoff final thanks to a brilliant strike from Sam Glenfield at Tolka Park.

Foster, who spent 19 years playing professionally, most notably with lengthy spells in Scotland with Aberdeen, Rangers and St. Johnstone, racked up over 500 career appearances.

He ended his career with Detroit City FC in the United States in 2022 after he joined the USL Championship side in a player-coaching role for the second half of 2022 before making the return to Scotland.

The 40-year-old made the move back home back in 2023, and was named Head of Academy Coaching with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell FC, whilst also holding the position of Motherwell’s Under 18 Head Coach.

Foster spent over two-and-a-half years at Fir Park, before departing earlier this month has he now takes up the role at Blues Assistant Coach to Jon Daly.

Speaking on his appointment at the RSC, Foster said: “I’m delighted to get the chance to work with Jon. I’m looking forward to getting to know the club and the people of Waterford. I’m really excited about the potential the club has here in Waterford”.

Waterford FC Head Coach Jon Daly also welcomed the appointment of Richard Foster to the club, saying: “I’m delighted to get Richard in. Although we haven’t worked together before in a coaching capacity, “I’ve known him a long time and heard very good things about his coaching ability. He’s an extremely hard working coach with a passion for helping players improve.” While it’s widely expected that both David Breen and Brian Murphy will also remain on board as part of the new management team, the focus now is for Daly, Foster and co to assemble a squad ahead of the new season.

With speculation rife regarding a number of key players that could to be set to leave the club ahead of the new season, it will be certainly interesting times ahead off the pitch in preparation for the new campaign.
