Waterford FC suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first-time since April 1 when they lost also for a first-time to Drogheda United this season in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division at Weavers Park as two massive mistakes proved oh so costly in a game that they failed to past the stage of mediocrity.
With the Blues losing keeper Sam Sargeant to injury in the lead-up to the game, new on loan signing Louis Jones had a moment to forget as the hosts were gifted the opener on 15 minutes. The netminder came to collect a long throw from Elicha Ahui that was flicked on, but Jones collided with Grant Horton that saw the ball drop for Pierrot to stab home from close-range.
As Waterford continued to play second fiddle in the opening half, they were further chances for Drogheda to extend their lead with Shane Farrell off target with a chance that came his way on 20 minutes before goalscorer Frantz Pierrot dragging a shot wide of Jones’ near post.
After missing over four months of the season through injury, Blues captain Barry Baggley entered the fray for the first-time since limping off against Dundalk back on March 25, and within seconds, he played the ball out wide right on 66 minutes that saw Power’s cross fall for Amond, but he headed wide.
Baggley cracked in a shot on 81 minutes when Robbie McCourt put in a ball that broke the skipper, but his goalbound effort was superbly blocked away by the Drogheda defence as the Blues tried to put some pressure on the home side.
As the game entered the final minute, Waterford were the cause of their own downfall once again as they gifted the home side a second goal as a misplaced pass gave Adam Foley a clear run at goal and he kept his composure to place the ball past Louis Jones for game, set and match Drogheda. Deserved at that.
