Waterford FC goalkeeper Stephen McMullan overcame a foot injury sustained while on international duty with Northern Ireland Under-21s to produce a superb performance and lead the Blues back to the Aviva Stadium in the Club Orange FAI Men’s Cup final.
The shot-stopper had been an injury concern in the build-up to the semi-final after picking up the problem while representing his country, but he shrugged off any fitness fears with a series of outstanding saves as Graham Coughlan’s side secured their place in the showpiece decider on November 8.
McMullan was one of Waterford’s standout performers on the night, producing a string of crucial interventions as the Blues weathered heavy pressure before emerging victorious.
Despite his heroics, the goalkeeper was keen to highlight the efforts of those around him.
"I think everyone stepped up, to be honest," he said.
"The blocks everyone was making, it was a real team effort. The lads were solid and got through the first half. We just had to ride the storm and in the second half cleared them away."
Waterford spent long periods on the back foot during the opening 45 minutes, with McMullan repeatedly called upon to keep his side in the contest. The goalkeeper responded with a series of important saves and was grateful to see those in front of him throwing themselves into challenges to keep the opposition at bay.
Having survived the early storm, the Blues looked far more composed after the interval and McMullan felt the game eventually swung in Waterford's favour.
"It was always going to be a completely different game and it's just one of them that went for us, so we're all grateful that we could get the result."
The on-loan Fleetwood Town goalkeeper said his display was the product of the hard work put in every day at training, with the squad constantly preparing for decisive moments.
"That's what you train for. We work our socks off every day in training for moments like that. We're just grateful we can get through and obviously roll on the cup final."
The result sends Waterford back to the Aviva Stadium for the first time since 2022 and continues the positive momentum that has developed under manager Graham Coughlan.
While the prospect of a cup final is an exciting one for players and supporters alike, McMullan insisted there remains a major focus within the dressing room on securing the club's Premier Division status.
"Ever since Graham's come in, I think everyone had a steadier belief at that point, so I have no doubt that we'll keep the run going and get us safe."
