The Waterford County GAA Board has taken the next step in its ambitious redevelopment of Walsh Park with a fresh planning application aimed at making significant updates to the original proposal approved in 2018.

The application, recently lodged with Waterford City and County Council, outlines a series of proposed amendments to the existing permission granted under planning references 18/448 and 24/1. The revamped plans promise a more modern, accessible, and spectator-friendly venue in the heart of the city, located at Walsh Park, Keane’s Road, Slievekeale Road, and Browley West.

Key highlights of the proposed upgrades include:

Western Terrace Overhaul

A completely revised uncovered western terrace is on the cards, featuring new undercroft spectator facilities. The adjacent western boundary will also be reimagined, with upgraded turnstile and vehicular access points, and enhancements to the public realm along Keane’s Road.

Northern Stand Modifications

Changes to the northern stand will allow the existing clubhouse to remain in place to its west, while new toilet facilities are set to be added to its eastern end.

New Pavilion Building

A two-storey pavilion is planned for the eastern side of the site. It will house upgraded team and referee facilities on the ground floor and multi-purpose administrative spaces on the first floor.

South-Eastern Reconfiguration

This area of the grounds will see a new entrance arrangement, enhanced parking, additional turnstiles, a relocated concession stand, improved toilet facilities, bicycle parking, and bin storage areas.

Southern Stand Accessibility

A new disability access point is to be added to the southern stand, improving inclusivity for fans entering from Slievekeale Road.

Sustainable Energy Measures

The southern stand will also feature roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) panels, signaling a move towards more sustainable energy use.

Modern Amenities

The plan includes the installation of two new electronic scoreboards and the relocation of several concession and toilet facilities within the western sections of the stadium.

These changes are part of a wider vision to modernise Walsh Park, enhance the matchday experience, and accommodate the evolving needs of players, officials, and supporters alike. All proposed amendments will be subject to standard planning procedures, including public consultation and council approval.

Local GAA fans and residents can review the application and submit observations in the coming weeks as Walsh Park edges closer to becoming a state-of-the-art sporting venue for Waterford.
