The overall winner of the Waterford Sports Awards will be announced at the Granville Hotel on Saturday.

Larry Guinan will be inducted to the Waterford Sports Hall of Fame at the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel on Saturday, January 17th.

Guinan was part of the last Waterford side to win the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 1959, as the Mount Sion man played a starring role in a success not since replicated in the last 66 years.

Larry played for Waterford for 16 years from 1957 to 1973, and scored 12-11 for his county, winning three Munster medals, a national league, and that famed All-Ireland crown.

At club level, the Mount Sion man won 11 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship titles and 3 Waterford Senior Football Championship titles. Guinan also won five Railway Cup medals and played for five years for the Déise senior footballers.

Now 88, Larry is widely considered one of the greatest hurlers ever to grace the pitch and is a worthy entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame. He is the second entrant, following the induction of Alfie Hale in 2024.

A statement from the committee of the Waterford Sports Awards judging committee reads: “Despite hanging up his boots 50 years ago, the fact that Larry Guinan remains a household name in GAA quarters is testament to his ability, longevity, and legacy. Larry is a hero to many young and old and is one of just three surviving members of the famed 1959 team alongside Michael O’Connor and Freddie O’Brien.

"His versatility on the pitch, his leadership qualities and immense talent are among many reasons why he continues to be held in such high regar,d and this recognition is befitting of his status as one of Waterford’s all-time sporting greats.”

Guinan will be the guest of honour on the night as he is inducted into the Hall of Fame while the twelve monthly winners will battle it out to be crowned the overall Waterford Sports Star of the Year for 2025.

MAHONY WINS DECEMBER AWARD

Pauric Mahony has been announced as the December winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel, following a series of standout performances for Ballygunner Hurling Club on the national stage.

Mahony played a pivotal role as Ballygunner reached the AIB All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship Final for just the second time in the club’s history.

The Waterford star delivered an outstanding scoring display in the semi-final victory over Leinster champions St. Martin’s, contributing 0-7 as the Gunners ran out convincing 0-19 to 0-10 winners.

His influence was also felt earlier in the campaign when he scored 0-5 in the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship final, helping Ballygunner secure a crucial win against Éire Óg Inis and book their place on the national stage.

reparations are now intensifying as Pauric Mahony and his Ballygunner teammates look ahead to the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship Final, where they will face Loughrea of Galway in the weeks ahead.

The Waterford champions will be aiming to add to their sole All-Ireland title, which they famously captured in 2022, and Mahony’s form will be central to their hopes of lifting the trophy once again.

Mahony’s December accolade also sees him make Waterford Sports Awards history, as he becomes the first-ever repeat winner of the monthly award. He previously claimed the honour in September 2024, underlining his consistent excellence at the highest level of club hurling.

The 2025 Waterford Sports Awards will culminate in a gala banquet at the Granville Hotel on Saturday, January 17th, where the overall Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
