Cappoquin Tourin got off to a winning PIHC start over Tramore.

JJ Kavanagh & Sons Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship

Cappoquin/Tourin 1-21

Tramore 0-16

Beaten finalists last year in the inaugural Premier Intermediate championship Cappoquin, now fully amalgamated with neighbours Tourin, are determined to go all the way this year and on Saturday last in Lemybrien they got their campaign off to a winning start with an eight point win over Tramore that was probably more flattering than that winning margin might suggest.

Leading at halftime by two points Tramore will harbour regrets at not having made better use of the strong breeze in their favour as they had the better of the exchanges but could only finish the half with a 0-10 to 0-8 lead.

With the teams matching score for score they were level at 0-5 each on the 20th minute with five Tramore players, David Cantwell, Sam Lenihan, Conor Butler, John Clancy and Eoin Quinlan, all scoring with Aaron O’Sullivan (3), Tommy McCarthy and Shane O’Rourke on target for Cappoquin/Tourin. Further Tramore points before the break from Ian Thompson, John Clancy, Sam Lenehan and Dan Morrissey to three in reply from Aaron O’Sullivan left Cappoquin in a strong position going into the second half with wind advantage.

The first ten minutes of the second half saw Tramore outscored by 0-4 to 0-2 as Cappoquin drew level. Parity continued to be maintained as Aaron O’Sullivan and Tommy McCarthy points were matched by two scores from Ian Thompson before Tramore cheekily regained the lead with a Dan Morrissey point.

Threatening came to pass in the 49th minute with Killian O’Sullivan shooting to the Tramore net for a 1-14 to 0-15 lead. With that score the Tramore resistance began to waver and Cappoquin outscored their opponents by 0-7 to 0-2 in the remainder of the game.

Though fielding without some four or five injured players including Shane and Gavin Fives, the winner had outstanding performers in Andy Molumby, Shane O’Rourke, Aaron O’Sullivan and Tommy McCarthy while Tramore were best served by Brendan Hogan, Conor Butler, John Clancy and Sam Lenehan.
