Around 995,000 people enjoyed a visit to Waterford City during the Winterval festival this year, with data from the final days of the festival still to be compiled.

With attendance data from the closing days yet to be added, organisers expect the final total to rise even further.

Over the Christmas period, the streets of Waterford were covered with food vendors, crafts stalls, buskers and festive characters.

The record numbers are thanks to the organisers, sponsors and the men and women on the streets during the hectic days and the cold nights, who ensured our city was awash with colour and cheer.

Some familiar faces include Victor, who was positioned outside City Square, with his Moonshine Balloon Magic stall.

Victor said that even despite tricky weather, he loved being out and about.

"This is a really good event that brings people from all over the country and I really love being here because there's so much happening and everyone is in a good mood, and my job is to try make people happy too."

Meanwhile, at the markets on Great George's Street, Mia and Stelu, from Yarntarctica, were busy selling and making their crochet items throughout the festival.

They said: “We really enjoyed it and it was really nice seeing everyone on the streets.”

The pair say that their most popular item this year was their crochet cats.

“The cats sold like crazy,” Mia said, "I made the last ones last night because I had none left yesterday. Everyone loves them!”

Concluding the festival, Winterval Festival Director Trevor Darmody, paid tribute to those who make the festival possible each year.

"Huge credit is due to the event organisers, performers, traders and everyone who participates, as well as the volunteers who go above and beyond to ensure the festival runs smoothly. Winterval is a true team effort, and that spirit is felt right across the city.”
