Works in motion along South East Greenway

South East Greenway
Latest updates on the South East Greenway were shared at the Piltown Municipal District meeting.
According to acting Director of Services for Kilkenny County Council Ian Gardner, there has been a push towards completing road works on Lot 5A, the 5.5km stretch between Ferrybank to Curraghmore, ahead of the oncoming winter months.
He stated: "Glas Civil Engineering Ltd. commenced works in November 2023 on Lot 5A of the greenway. Over the past few weeks there was a big push to carry out pavement surfacing works, in advance of the winter months, with circa 4.95km overlaid with a bound material. Fencing works along the greenway continues and the installation of the timber screen fencing along Lot 2, Ferrybank, has also commenced."
A safety fence is set to be installed in the permanent car park at Ballyverneen, Glenmore, later this month. A road safety audit will be taken prior to the opening of the 39 bay car park.
Mr Gardner continued: "The programme remains on track for the works contract to be completed by the end of the year, thereafter, this section of the greenway will be subject to a safety audit and minor finishing out works to facilitate the opening of the same to the public in Quarter 1, 2025.
"The Project Landowner Liasion Officer is continuing to engage with landowners adjoining the greenway in relation to boundary treatment and crossing points."
The meeting also heard updates on the Greenway link to Glenmore.
Mr Gardner stated: "In May, the Department of Rural and Community Development announced that our funding application under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund (RRDF) to progress this project was successful.
"This funding will now allow us to proceed to the detail design, land acquisition and construction stage of the project. This project also incorporates the provision of a new Pink Rock Cycle Loop, which will offer greenway users, travelling from the New Ross end, the option of cycling back along an alternative route beside the River Barrow."
