Woman guilty of possessing child sexual abuse material Waterford court hears

The woman cannot be named for legal reasons.

A woman has made a plea of guilty to the charge of possessing child sexual abuse material.

The woman cannot be named as the case was heard in camera and reporting restrictions apply.

She recently appeared at Waterford Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography contrary to Section 6(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998. The term 'child pornography' is used in Irish legislature. A person guilty of the offence faces a prison term of up to five years.

Defence counsel Brian P. O'Shea requested a probation and welfare report before the woman's sentencing, saying there was a background that can be explained "by way of mitigation". Judge Eugene O'Kelly asked if there was an identifiable victim in the material. "No," he answered. The application for the report was accepted.

The woman will be sentenced in January 2027.
