Parking fines collected make up some of Waterford City and County Council’s roads budget.

That is according to Director of Roads at the council, Gabriel Hynes.

Mr Hynes was responding to a query from Councillor Niamh O’Donovan at the June sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council.

Cllr O’Donovan asked: “What happens to the money that is raised from parking tickets? Where does that go?

General pot

Cllr O'Donovan further probed: "Is it earmarked for the area they are given in, or does it go to the general council pot?”

Mr Hynes responded: “We have an overall roads budget of €50 million with income and expenditure, and as part of that budget you would have passed.

"The revenue from parking tickets goes into, obviously, to cover some of the additional expenditure for the roads, which would be general expenditure across the areas.”
