New West Waterford councillor Kate O'Mahoney has donated €2,000 from her municipal allowance to the Dungarvan Hockey Club.

The club thanked the councillor on social media.

"Dungarvan Hockey Club would like to extend our sincere thanks to Sinn Féin Cllr Kate O’Mahoney for her generous donation of €2,000 from her municipal allowance.

"We are truly grateful for your support, Kate. Your contribution is deeply appreciated and will play a meaningful role in advancing our pitch development project at St. Augustine’s College.

"Thank you for thinking of us and for investing in the future of our club!" wrote the club.

Cllr O'Mahoney was co-opted onto the council in the Dungarvan-Lismore District at the end of last year.

She took up the seat vacated by Conor McGuinness when he was elected to the Dáil.

In response to the club's thanks, Cllr O'Mahoney posted that she was happy to do it.

"After the club was vandalised in the middle of raising funds for the pitch development project, this allocation of money was a no-brainer.

"Delighted to keep doing all that I can to encourage, promote and support women in sport!!" wrote Cllr O'Mahoney.
