'We want to see it open' - Gas Works bridge closure a 'legacy issue'

The bridge has been closed for a lengthy period of time.
The current status of the Gas Works Bridge was raised at the September meeting of the Metropolitan Council. The bridge has been closed off for a number of years over safety concerns.
Councillor Mary Roche asked: "The Gas Works Bridge, which has been closed for years, Councillor Daniels' father (Davy Daniels Snr), God rest him, always put this very high on the agenda and we want to see it open. It seems to me that it is a very simple fix. It shouldn’t be beyond the capacity of the Council to remediate it and to have it open because it makes the journey around the Gasworks carpark quite long."
A member of the Executive said: "That's a legacy issue, I don't think there is an easy solution, it's before my time starting here. I can find out the details and give you an email on the specific issues there and what work can be done."
The Gas Works Bridge was installed at Waterside in the 1880s, as a single-arch wrought iron footbridge. The bridge was re-installed in 2017 but closed in 2021 because of safety concerns.
According to the National Built Heritage Service: "The construction of the bridge using cast-iron is of technical interest, and the bridge forms an attractive, discreet feature in the locality."
