Waterford's population increased by an estimated 2.5% in the past year

New figures from the CSO show that Waterford's population grew by an estimated 3,300 people between 2024 and 2025
Waterford’s population increased by 3,300 people in the last year.
That is according to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office as part of the Population and Migration Estimates, April 2025 release.
The estimated population of Waterford at the end of April 2025 was 134,100 people, a more than 3,000 increase on last year’s figure of 130,800.
The figures are estimates, as actual figures are measured through the census every five years.
The last Census was in 2022, and the population then was 127,363, an increase of 10% The annual estimates are based on who is usually resident.
The increase in females was double that of males in Waterford.
The number of women and girls in Waterford went from 66,000 to 68,300.
And the number of boys and men increased from 64,800 to 65,800.
There was no major increase in the age groups in Waterford.
Population increases don't just include those coming into the country or county but births as well.
Every region in Ireland saw a population increase.
The south east region increased from 474,800 people in 2024 to 486,400 in 2025.
The population of Ireland now stands at 5458 600 people, an increase of 78,300.
In the 12 month period, 125,300 people immigrated to Ireland while 65,600 left.
Immigration was down 16% compared to the same period in 2024, while emigration was down 6.2%.

Of those coming into the country, 31,500 were Irish citizens returning.
EU and UK citizens accounted for 25,300 and 4,900, respectively.
The remaining 63,600 were from other countries.
