Members of a County Waterford active retirement group enjoyed participating in Adult Safeguarding Day earlier this month in addition to enjoying some time out and about throughout the locality.

One of group members involved with the Tay and Mahon Valley Active Retirement Group, commented: "The theme this year is on the rights of all adults and strengthening understanding and implementation of Assisted Decision Making in services and communities."

"Since the Assisted Decision Making(Capacity) Act came into effect in 2023, all people are presumed to have the capacity and have legal protection to ensure their wishes about money, health and welfare are respected," he said.

He added that when it comes to such matters family and friends must take steps to hear and support each person's decision.

The group member also recalled memories of long ago and in particular thoughts of a wet November around 1950, cutting firewood with a cross-cut saw.

"There were two people, one person at each end of the saw, and a bushman saw for the lighter wood placed on the horse to cut," he said.

"Timber [was] stacked in a small house near the kitchen where it was split with an axe or hatchet," he added.

He said a tree trunk, around three foot long, was placed at back of fire and would last one week or more.

"Looking up the chimney you could see the stars, much of the heat went up that chimney," he said.

"Many of the three-legged [skillet] pot of potatoes were boiled there," he added.
