Adam Sweeney has been honoured at a mayoral reception in City Hall after making history on the world’s highest mountain.

The 22-year-old from Dunmore East became the first person from Waterford and the youngest Irish person to summit Mount Everest, which stands at 8,848.86 metres.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Liam Brazil, hosted the reception on July 7 in recognition of Adam’s achievement, which saw him reach the summit on May 20 following weeks of extreme conditions on the mountain.

Adam completed the climb as part of Team Ireland alongside teammates Padraic O’Hara and Eanna McGowan. Expedition leader Jason Black was also part of the team but was forced to abandon his own summit attempt after sustaining an ankle injury.

Speaking at the reception, Mayor Brazil praised the resilience shown by Adam and his teammates during what proved to be a demanding and dangerous expedition.

The team had initially been forced to abandon its first summit attempt just 400 meters from the peak, before regrouping and successfully reaching the top on a second attempt.

Adam also faced a serious challenge on the descent when he ran out of supplementary oxygen, forcing him to make a slow and controlled journey through Everest’s infamous “Death Zone”, where oxygen levels are dangerously low, and conditions are among the most extreme on earth.

Mayor Brazil said Adam’s success was the result of exceptional determination, courage and perseverance.

The achievement came after 47 days on Mount Everest and months of intensive preparation, including major expeditions to Aconcagua in Argentina and Ama Dablam in Nepal, as well as extensive alpine training before taking on the world’s highest peak.

Congratulating Adam, Mayor Brazil said: “Adam’s story is one of exceptional courage, strength and willpower. Thank you for being such an inspiration and such a wonderful ambassador for Dunmore East and Waterford. We congratulate you on this remarkable achievement and wish you every success in the future.”

He added that Adam’s achievement had brought pride to communities across the county and reflected the spirit of determination associated with Waterford.

“To stand on top of the world at just 22 years of age is an extraordinary accomplishment,” Mayor Brazil said. “Adam has shown what can be achieved through focus, bravery and absolute commitment, and Waterford is immensely proud of him.”

The mayor said Adam’s journey would inspire young people across Waterford to pursue ambitious goals, no matter how difficult they may appear.

While summiting Everest marks a major milestone, Adam is already preparing for his next challenge.

He plans to complete 32 Ironman-distance triathlons in 32 consecutive days across all 32 counties of Ireland to raise money for charity.

The mayor was joined at the reception by Deputy Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr Jim Darcy, Cllr Pat Fitzgerald, Cllr Adam Wyse and Cllr Joe Kelly, who also congratulated Adam on his remarkable accomplishments.
