Members of Tramore Golf Club in Co Waterford showcased their caring and charitable nature over the weekend when they participated in their second 'Play in Green' day in support of Waterford and South East Samaritans.

The event took place on Sunday, June 14.

On what was a lovely day, 180 ladies and gents played a team of four event and there were specials prizes handed out too for the best dressed.

Kim Mullins won the ladies and Shay Burke the men’s prize, with both of them looking very stylish in green.

Golf Ireland appointed Samaritans as one of its national charity partners last year.

For a number of years Breast Cancer (Play in Pink) and Special Olympics have also been charity partners to Golf Ireland.

Very successful golf days were also held in Dungarvan and Carrick-on-Suir in the last week to raise vital funds for Samaritans.

Rory Fitzgerald, who is the Samaritans and Golf Ireland Lead, said that the local clubs deserve great credit for supporting the 'Play in Green' initiative which creates awareness of Samaritans, raises vital funds and might also lead to recruitment of new volunteers.

He highlighted how the Samaritans offers support for anyone going through an emotional crisis through their helpline which operates 24/7 every day of the year.

The Samaritans also visit secondary schools in the South East, providing mental health workshops and through their outreach team attend local agricultural shows and various other events in the South East during the year.

This is a very significant year for the Waterford branch, which was formed in 1976.

That milestone anniversary was recognised recently by the Mayor of Waterford City & County, Cllr Seamus Ryan, when a number of volunteers were invited to the Mayor’s parlour for presentation of a certificate to acknowledge the branch's 50th anniversary.
