There will be public lighting outages over the winter.

That is according to Waterford City and County Council’s Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes, at the September sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council.

“Public lighting is in a difficult, poor state. While we have done considerable work in relation to PLEEP(Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project), the underground ducting needs significant investment.

“We will have public lights out during the winter, but we will endeavor to restore them in a timely manner, subject to available funding,” said Mr Hynes.

Mr Hynes said that he was commissioning a report on the deficit in lighting infrastructure across the county.

And he hoped the report would be completed by the end of the year.

The director was responding to a query from Councillor Kate O’Mahoney, who requested an update on the tendering process in Childers Estate in Dungarvan.

Lighting in Childers Estate has been an ongoing issue with lights out for weeks and even months.

“I understand it is going to be a major project to fix these lights between the physical work and the costs, but residents are becoming more concerned as we go into the winter, “ said Cllr O’Mahoney.

Mr Hynes said the tendering process was due for completion in the next couple of weeks, and they would then have a better idea of the cost of the work.
