Waterford Council nominates Independent Kieran McCarthy as Presidential candidate

Following presentations from eleven candidates at Waterford City and County Council’s Presidential Election Special Meeting this afternoon, former Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy has received the Presidential Candidate nomination from Waterford.
During his fifteen minute presentation before the elected members, McCarthy said that as president he would champion Ireland's cultural heritage, strengthen links with Irish diaspora and international ambassadors, and collaborate closely with Ireland's local authorities.
Proposed by Cllr. Joe O’ Riordan and seconded by Cllr. Joe Kelly, the Cork city councillor received 11 votes for, 10 against with 5 abstentions.
Those who voted for McCarthy were: Joeanne Bailey, Declan Barry, Donal Barry, Declan Clune, David Daniels, Jim Griffin, Blaise Hannigan, Joe Kelly, Joe O’Riordan, Thomas Phelan and John Pratt.
Those who voted against were: Liam Brazil, Tom Cronin, Jim D’Arcy, Damien Geoghegan, John Hearne, Jason Murphy, Pat Nugent, Niamh O’Donovan, Eamon Quinlan and Frank Quinlan.
Those who abstained from the vote were: Catherine Burke, Sandra Conway, Pat Fitzgerald, Mary Roche and Adam Wyse.
