Waterford City and County Council's income from Government grants have increased by over 50% in the past eight years

Waterford City and County Council ranks in the middle compared to other South East county council's funding from central government.

Waterford City and County Council’s budget for 2026 outlined €207.3 million of projected expenditure.

€97.5 million of that funding came from central government grants, a 47.08% share of the council’s total expenditure.

The Department of Housing (€55 million) and TII Transport Infrastructure Ireland (€29.3 million) were the two largest providers of the council’s grant income.

A comparison to other South East county council budgets shows Waterford stands third out of the five counties when it comes to relative government support.

Tipperary County Council received the most support from central government- €153.1 million of their €274.2 million budget came from grants, a 55.8% total share.

At the other end was Kilkenny, with 46.4% of its €129.4 million budget from Government grants.

The other primary sources of Waterford City and County Council’s budget income were Goods & Services, Commercial Rates and the Local Property tax.
