A well-known and popular woman from Waterford City was joined by family and friends recently as she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Annie Kelly, from Hennessy's Road celebrated her milestone birthday in Waterford Community Care Centre where she is extremely popular among fellow clients and staff members.
Annie has witnessed an enormous amount of history throughout her lifetime including the Great Depression, the World War II, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Vietnam War, a number of currency changes in Ireland and the rural electrification scheme to name but a few.

Originally from Arundel Square, in Waterford City, Annie spent 70 years living in Hennessy's Road, also in the city, and it was there she set up home with her beloved late husband, Jim, who was the Roanmore area. Jim passed away eight years ago, aged 91.
The couple met in the Olympic Ballroom and spent over 69 happy years or marriage together and raised a family of five sons: Tony, David, Bernard, Eamonn and Martin.

Educated in St Joseph's School, in Parnell Street, Annie worked a short time in Cahill's Cafeteria which was a popular eatery in Gladstone Street.
Annie has always been a jolly and friendly person whose inherent kindness is still evident today.
"If she has something she has to share it out, even to this day," her son Bernard told Waterford News & Star.

Annie's birthday party was held in Saturday, August 24, in the Waterford Community Care Centre and she took great delight in cutting her cake. She was also presented with her letter from President Higgins, acknowledging her milestone birthday.

She was joined on the day by her family including her grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren. The staff in the centre also took great delight in helping Annie celebrate her birthday.

"The staff are absolutely fantastic there," said Bernard.
It was a great day for the family and a fantastic celebration of a very special Déíse lady.
