WATCH: Abbey Road reopens for traffic in Waterford as schools come back

Abbey Road in Ferrybank has reopened to traffic.
Abbey Road, in Ferrybank on the outskirts of Waterford City, has reopened for traffic having been closed since the end of June.
The closure was implemented to facilitate deep excavation works to be carried out as part of the ongoing multi-million euro North Quays development.
In announcing the road closure in June a spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council told Waterford News & Star that the works were part of the next phase of works on the North Quays Infrastructure project.
“The next phase of road infrastructure works will proceed to the Abbey Road area in Ferrybank,” said the spokesperson, at the time.
“Deep excavation work on Abbey Road necessitates a temporary road closure,” she added.
“To minimise disruption, these works have been scheduled during the school summer holidays and local access will be facilitated.”
It was initially planned that the road would reopen on August 16, however, an extension was required and there were concerns locally that there would be major traffic issues once local schools reopened.
However, while there is still likely to be some traffic delays the news that the road has reopened will come as welcome news to those travelling to and through the area in the morning and evening.
