The fire that devastated Tycor Business Centre in Waterford city in recent weeks has been raised before a sitting of the European Parliament.

During the meeting, Ireland South MEP Kathleen Funchion asked that EU institutions do all they can to help impacted business and community groups whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the fire.

A €750,000 support scheme has been approved by the Government for businesses and community groups impacted by the recent blaze.

Funchion called on the supports to be delivered as a matter of urgency.

“We have seen devastation for the businesses, for the people working in those industries, and also for many community groups and those that deal with people with disabilities" she said.

“I want to stress that we need to find alternative arrangements for anybody that is reliant on the community services in particular.

“I do understand that recent packages have been announced by the Irish government, but we do need to see these funds actioned as a matter of urgency. We’re in the second week of those workers now having no income and having no certainty in terms of their work and their livelihoods, all in the backdrop of a cost of living crisis.

“Any assistance has to be actual real assistance that benefits workers, particularly those in the community sector and those who are relying on services for people with disabilities and additional needs.”
