Tributes have been paid to a young County Waterford cyclist following his sudden, accidental death in France.

It's understood Tomás Walsh was in the country to watch the Tour de France cycle race.

A very talented cyclist in his own right he was a member of the Comeragh Cycling Club and in an online post the organisation said: 'It is with great sadness that we have learned that our clubmate and friend young Tomás Walsh has lost his life in France.

'We’re truly shattered by this news and extend our sincerest condolences to all his family and friends.

'Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.'

Comments made in response to the club's online post also indicated the huge respect and high regard in which Tomas was held by all who knew him, not just in Waterford, but across the country - especially in cycling circles.

"So so sad such a lovely young man always a big smile and a chat, condolences to all his family and club," commented one person. While another posted: "Sleep easy young man. You were one of life's good ones."
