Tributes have been paid to Shane O’Brien, an emerging talent on the Irish cycling scene, who tragically passed away after an accident in Lismore, County Waterford, on June 16.

Cycling Ireland, on its social media pages, paid tribute to the teenager and said it was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the news of his untimely passing.

Aged only 16, Shane showed great promise, following in his brother Liam O’Brien’s footsteps, who is a professional cyclist, a member of the Lidl - Trek Future Racing team.

Shane was in his first year as a junior member of the Cams Majaco team, having formerly cycled with the Fermoy Cycling Club.

He represented Ireland at an international level during the Course de la Paix in the Czech Republic in early May.

The incident occurred on the N72 road between Lismore and Cappoquin.

Shane was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the lorry - which was parked at the time of the accident - was unharmed.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed this collision to come forward and road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N72 between Lismore and Cappoquin, Co. Waterford between 10.30am and 11.15am on June 16, are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on (058) 48600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
