The local RNLI lifeboat crew in Tramore, Co Waterford, were paged recently following a report of a surfer in difficulty in Tramore Bay. The lifeboat was launched on service within minutes, helmed by Ian Flynn with crew David Hough and Ronan McConnell.
Surfers were enjoying the swell and conditions at the time in the Tramore Pier area of the Bay. Following further investigation by the volunteer crew on the water and ashore, along with members of Tramore Coastguard Unit, all the surfers were accounted for and found to be safe and well.
The crew were stood down by MRCC with the call being considered a false alarm with good intent. The RNLI encourages people, if they think someone is struggling or in difficulty on or in the water, to phone 999 or 112.
With regard to the recent incident in Tramore, Clive Smith, Tramore RNLI Operations Manager said: "I would like to thank the vigilant member of public who saw what they thought was a genuine emergency and did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. It is always better to be safe than sorry in these situations."
