Three brothers lure victim to shed in Waterford and viciously attack him over drug debt

The brothers tried to change the limits of their High Court bail to go on holiday to Tenerife.

Three brothers in Waterford lured an unsuspecting victim to a shed where they carried out a horrifically violent attack.

Michael McDonagh (30), of 11 Meadow View, Cahir, Co. Tipperary, Andrew McDonagh (28) of 35 Ballytruckle Road, Waterford City, and Bernie Patrick McDonagh (19) of 11 Dun Uisce, Cahir, Co. Tipperary entered guilty pleas for their role in savagely assaulting a male victim.

Investigating Detective Garda Sean Lane appeared in court on behalf of the State to outline the facts of the case.

Drug debt

The victim had been paying €200 a week to the McDonaghs for a drug debt worth €4,000. The debt was then 'bought' by Andrew, who raised it to €14,000 "for no reason".

On October 14, 2025, the victim was lured to a shed at 5 The Crescent, St. John's Park, Waterford City, in relation to the debt. He was viciously attacked by all three men, who used copper pipe bars and a hammer in their assault.

The court heard that Michael laughed as the victim pleaded at him to stop. One brother said: "You f**k with one of us, you f**k with all of us." Michael McDonagh grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and promised to "go after" him if he told anyone, and made a similar threat against the victim's partner and family.

The injured party was unable to walk for three days after the attack and suffered a bleed on the brain, fractured skull and spine, broken fingers and cracked knuckles. He spent six nights in University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and has to undergo physiotherapy.

Gardaí found six vials of blood on the ground of the shed that matched the victim's DNA profile.

He made a formal statement to Gardaí in January 2026 after a member of his family was intimidated by one of the defendants.

'Morally wrong'

In January 2026, Michael McDonagh was refused bail in Waterford District Court and taken into custody. On Thursday, October 8, he pleaded guilty to the assault and use of copper pipes during a video link hearing. Andrew and Bernie Patrick pleaded guilty to their roles in the attack earlier in the week.

Andrew and Bernie Patrick also sought an order to vary the conditions of their High Court bail. Judge Eugene O'Kelly heard from their legal representatives that the men wanted to go on a family holiday to Tenerife later this month.

Det. Lane appealed to Judge O'Kelly that allowing Andrew and Bernie Patrick to go on a holiday while their victim suffers daily would be "morally wrong". He said: "It sends out the wrong message to the victim and the community."

Det. Lane commented: "I didn't believe that the defendants would be looking to go on holidays."

The court heard that Andrew had breached his High Court bail conditions on eight occasions, the most recent occurring on September 27.

Judge O'Kelly was emphatic in revoking Andrew's High Court bail application, noting the severity of the attack and his breaches. He stressed the level of blackmail, intimidation and extortion displayed by the defendants. Andrew was taken into custody. The application to vary Bernie Patrick's bail was withdrawn by counsel.

The trio will appear before the court on January 13 to fix a date for sentencing.
