A well-known Waterford priest is recovering from surgery following injuries sustained in an incident at an army barracks in Galway on Thursday, August 15. A 16-year-old male has been remanded in custody following a court appearance in relation to the incident.

The teenager, whose identity is protected as he is a minor, appeared before Judge Gerard Furlong at a special sitting of Galway District Juvenile Court on Saturday. He's charged with assault causing harm to Waterford priest and army chaplain, Fr Paul Murphy.

Judge Furlong was then told during the bail hearing that it's believed the accused holds a "radical Islamist mindset".

The court heard that the teenager was arrested at 11.10pm on August 15 at Renmore Army Barracks, Galway and was charged the following day.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Fr Murphy awaited surgery in relation to stabbing injuries and is now in recovery.

The Garda Commissioner wished the injured Defence Forces member a full and speedy recovery.
