Taoiseach Micheál Martin has announced that the cabinet will meet today to hear proposals from Ministers regarding the support to those affected by the Tycor Business Centre fire, which he has called an “appalling situation”.
35 businesses across multiple units are currently counting the costs of the inferno that ripped through the Old Jute Factory building on Saturday. The Taoiseach was attending Waterford and Cork in the Munster Senior hurling championship as the fire took hold at nearby Tycor Avenue.
Before entering government buildings this morning, the Taoiseach said: “There are a number of items at cabinet today that are significant, particularly where Minister Burke and others will come forward about the appalling situation in Waterford.
“The terrible fire has put a lot of businesses and social enterprises out of action. There is a very strong intergovernmental approach to help those by this. Minister James Browne, John Cummins, and Mary Butler were there yesterday.
“Minister Peter Burke will bring proposals to the cabinet today and will be visiting also. Minister Dara Callery will also be doing all he can to help. We are looking at an interagency and an intergovernmental approach to dealing with what has been a shocking fire that has impacted terribly on so many people.”
Minister Burke will meet business owners in Waterford this afternoon and will also address members of the media.
