Survivors of Waterford paedophile Bill Kenneally to meet Taoiseach

The survivors of paedophile Bill Kenneally and their legal team to meet Taoiseach Michéal Martin this week.

Survivors of paedophile Bill Kenneally are expected to meet with the Taoiseach this Thursday at Dáil Éireann.

The meeting comes after the publication of the report into Kenneally's crimes and his recent death. Kenneally died last Thursday at age 75 while serving a prison sentence.

The report revealed how Keneally evaded justice for years despite the Gardaí being aware and his politically connected family, including former Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Kenneally. The report established a grave dereliction of duty by Gardaí 'even by the standards of the 80's'.

The Kenneally family were a political dynasty in Waterford, with a number of members acting as TD's, Senators and Councillors for Fianna Fáil. The report showed that former Mayor and TD, Billy Keneally Snr and Monsignor John Sine knew about the abuse as far back as the 1980's.

Taoiseach Martin said that while the report did not implicate the party, the 'two former public representatives involved did wrong in the manner in which they addressed the issue'.

Chief Whip Mary Butler said in a recent interview with Damien Tiernan that Fianna Fáil was 'not implicated as an organisation'.

She did, however, apologise “if there’s anything I have ever done that caused trauma, distress or hurt” to the victims.
