Study underway for Waterford-Cork Greenway

The study is being done in collaboration between Waterford and Cork County Councils.
A feasibility study is underway on the Greenway link between Waterford and Cork.
Cork County Council and Waterford City & County Council have announced, in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), that the study will be undertaken on the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway.
Over the upcoming summer months, the project team will prepare a strategic plan that will steer the overall project through to a successful delivery.
The study will also ensure that the project stays up to date with national planning frameworks.
The project aims to connect communities along the the old abandoned railway track, that used to connect the Déise to the Rebel County.
The Council stated: "The use of historic infrastructure and existing built heritage to link people with their local population centres, sports pitches, and schools is an important objective of this green initiative."
The creation of a walkable, cyclable path between the two counties could also see great success in terms of tourism.
The Greenway has been warmly welcomed and celebrated in other parts of Waterford and the South East, and attracts scores of visitors.
According to Waterford Council: "The project team will review the study area to ensure that the objectives of connecting local communities to key services and enabling a modal shift are fully utilised on the project."
After the study is completed, the project will go on to the design and environmental evaluation, prior to seeking planning consent.
