A popular restaurant in Dunmore East has hit the ground running this new year with plans to further modernise the old building it is located in.

Azzurro restaurant has received planning permission to install solar panels on the roof. They are also expanding the restaurant by replacing the plastic outdoor panels with permanent glazed panels, as well as adding a new entrance to the restaurant.

However, not everyone is enthusiastic about the change.

Senator Joe Conway made a submission on the planning application, writing, “While I accept that the restaurant has imperatives to maintain viability and profitability, it also has an obligation to ensure that any developments that it makes are harmonious with the surroundings and character of the neighbourhood.”

The building in which Azzurro is located is a designated protected structure. It was formerly Harney’s General Stores.

One objector to the expansion wrote, “If the original façade and frontage of Harney’s was allowed to reclaim its former glory – without modern additions – it would greatly enhance the experience for all.”
