'Significant progress' being made on Waterford's North Quays project
The North Quays is expected to be completed 'towards the end of 2027'.
Work on the North Quays development is expected to be complete 'towards the end of 2027', according to the latest report.
At the October meeting of the Piltown Municipal District, councillors heard about the new updates regarding the major infrastructural project, which first turned sod in 2023.
Director of Services for Kilkenny County Council Ian Gardner presented the new report on the North Quays Strategic Development Zone (SDZ).
He said: "The final surfacing of the Sustainable Transport Bridge will proceed in October with the red surfacing from the South Quays Plaza continuing along the centre of the bridge, denoting the cycle space, and the surfacing at the edges denoting pedestrian space.
"Other finishing works will then conclude, including the installation of lighting and street furniture, and the final commissioning of the automated systems for the opening span.
The removal of temporary river piles and the completion of the permanent pier protection system is also progressing."
Access from the South Plaza to the Sustainable Transport Bridge remains closed by hoarding and will open along with the bridge in late 2027.
"Construction of the new Transport Hub and railway station building has progressed to the final fit-out stage. Seating, lighting, public facilities, wayfinding signage and information and communications systems are being installed. Testing and commissioning of the station's operational systems will continue over the coming months, along with the construction of the southern entrance to the Transport Hub. The northern public plaza area is now open to the public and is providing a further access point to the opened section of the South East Greenway.
"Iarnród Éireann will continue the installation of trackside drainage, signalling, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure throughout 2026 and 2027. Regulatory approvals required for the operation of the new station and associated infrastructure will also be completed during this period."
