The public are being asked to participate in a search for small creatures in Waterford.

However, there it's unlikely that any green-eyed monsters of alien origin will be found as it's part of an exploration of the small creatures that live in freshwater streams.

The initiative will take place on Saturday, August 23, from 11am to 1pm in Newtown Woods, in Newtown, Tramore and is being organised as part of Heritage Week.

One of those behind the initiative said that by observing what species are present or absent, the level of contamination in a stream can be determined, commenting: "We will collect samples from the stream and using the Citizen Science Streams Index, search for the 'Good Guys', which need clean water to survive, and the 'Bad Guys,' which can tolerate polluted water."

Participants will also help identify other small creatures that live in the streambed. For more information, contact Tramore Eco Group at 087 908 1035 or tramoreecogroup@gmail.com.
