Removal of phone boxes

After many years of decommissioned phone boxes lying idle on the streets of Waterford, 10 kiosks will be removed in the next week
Removal of phone boxes

A decommissioned Eircom phone box on Waterford Quay-front is due to be removed, along with nine others across Waterford in the next few days.

All remaining derelict phone kiosks in Waterford city are to be decommissioned and removed by Friday, May 24.

As most of the telephone boxes have been broken and vandalised since they no longer serve a purpose, local councillors have called for them to be removed for quite some time now. Councillor Frank Quinlan raised the issue at many Council meetings, asking for their removal.

"I'm delighted to see the kiosks are being removed, which are totally outdated and were creating a dirty impression. I'm very passionate about the presentation of our beautiful city. These eyesores were not pleasant, removing them can only enhance the areas," said Cllr Quinlan.

Confirming the removal of the 10 remaining kiosks, Mayor Joe Conway added that the issue came to his attention when he attended a memorial service to veterans at the monument in Barrack Street, where "the view and ambience of this respectful plot was overshadowed by a vandalised kiosk".
